The
normal call-up age, for National Service, was eighteen, a relatively small
number had their
call-up deferred for several years in order to
complete their apprenticeship and College/University
studies
These deferred groups,
whose ages ranged from twenty-one to twenty-five, were called up in
separate intakes from the eighteen year olds and were trained in
separate "mature" platoons
They then went on for specialised training and
in this way the Military took advantage of a pool of
potentially well qualified and
skilled young men covering all the
trades and professions
